Kick-Ass 2 vs The Butler – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

The summer movie season is beginning to wind down, but we still have a few more big releases to see us through until September. Unsurprisingly, one of them this weekend is a comic book sequel looking to kick…well, you know. Here are our predictions:

Kick-Ass 2 is the sequel to the 2010 original that nearly made $100 million worldwide. Not bad for a movie that doesn’t come from Marvel or DC, but I still find it surprising that we wound up with a cinematic sequel. The three main stars, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are back, this time joined by Jim Carrey for the violent ride. Don’t expect blockbuster numbers this weekend, but Kick-Ass 2 should still bring in an audience. Look for a first place showing with $25 million.

Also opening this weekend is Lee Daniels’ The Butler, marking the return of Oprah Winfrey to the silver screen in over a decade. The film has a strong ensemble cast, and could prove to be smart counter programming against the summer action/blockbuster types. Look for a second place showing right behind Kick-Ass 2, with $24 million. If this one takes first, I won’t be surprised.

Jobs is the biography of Apple visionary Steve Jobs, with Ashton Kutcher in the lead role. While I’m personally interested in this film, released it in the dog days of summer feels like a huge mistake to me. Look for a debut outside the top five.

As for the rest of the top five, We’re The Millers will hit third place with $19 million. Elysium will follow behind it in fourth with $17.5, while Planes will close things out in fifth place with $12 million.
