Die Hard Dies Hard At The Box Office – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

When it comes to weekends, this wasn’t a good one for Die Hard, which had what can only be considered a lacklustre debut at the box office. With the President’s Day and Family Day long weekend’s still in full force, the numbers could change come Monday evening, but for our purposes, here’s how the past three days turned out.

A Good Day To Die Hard, the fifth instalment in the twenty-five year-old franchise, debut atop the box office with $25 million. If you’re a glass half full person (and a Bruce Willis), you’d say that number easily trumps the latest releases from Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, which is absolutely true. If you’re the glass half empty sort, you’ll notice that the number is down nearly $10 million from Live Free Or Die Hard’s $33 million opening. Either way, the number can’t be seen as anything less than a letdown, and, with the hideous reviews the film has been receiving, I don’t expect A Good Day To Die Hard to live long in theatres.

On the other hand, Safe Haven, the Nicholas Sparks adaptation, did fairly well, opening with $21 million. This is a strong number, considering that neither Josh Duhamel or Julianne Hough are A-list stars who can open films. Since opening on Valentine’s Day, Safe Haven has already made back it’s $28 million budget, so this is definitely a hit film.

As for the rest of the top five, Identity Thief dropped to number two with a solid $23 million and could top the four-day weekend when the final numbers come out on Monday. The animated Escape From Planet Earth debut at number four with $16 million, while Warm Bodies closed out the top five with $9 million. Meanwhile, Beautiful Creatures had to settle for a dismal sixth place showing with just $7.4 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) A Good Day To Die Hard –  $47 million
2) Safe Haven – $27 million
3) Identity Thief – $23 million
4) Beautiful Creatures – $14 million
5) Warm Bodies – $12.5 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

1) A Good Day To Die Hard –  $25 million
2) Identity Thief – $23.4 million
3) Safe Haven – $21.4 million
4) Escape From Planet Earth – $16 million
5) Warm Bodies – $9 million
