How did Nicholas Cage and The Rock fare? Which surprise under-performance made our results? See how our predictions stack up against the rest of this weekend’s Box Office Wrap Up.
Nicholas Cage reprises his role as Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, but according to reviews, this one makes the first movie look like cinematic gold. It did, however, bring in 22.1 million – a bit under what we had initially guessed but still not too bad!
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island hung in this weekend, making another19.9 million bringing its total gross to 53 million. All in all, a respectable showing for a family film starring The Rock. It is possibly riding on the riing star of Josh Hutcherson who can be seen portraying Peeta Mellark in the upcoming movie The Hunger Games.
One of the bigger surprises was the under-performance of This Means War. It rounded out the top 5 in its debut weekend, making only 17.4 million. We had initially expected this to top the box office this week, but – likely due to a corny premise and a forgettable trailer – it definitely didn’t take off. Look for a possible surge this coming week.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) This Means War – $28 million
2) Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance – $25 million
3) The Vow – $22 million
4) Safe House – $20 million
5) Journey 2: The Mysterious Island – $16 million
And here’s how the weekend turned out:
1) Safe House – $24 million
2) The Vow – $23 million
3) Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance – $22 million
4) Journey 2: The Mysterious Island – $19 million
5) This Means War – $17 million
Next week sees the release of Act of Valor, the new Amanda Seyfried flick Gone and the hopefully hilarious Wanderlust starring Paul Rudd and Malin Ackerman. Check back on Friday to see our predictions!
