Granny loves foreign films, and thankfully, Netflix is a treasure trove of excellent films from around the world. When a psychologist is assigned to a depressed federal police officer as part of his community service requirement, the unexpected happens.

A Time for Bravery

A Time for Bravery, which started off as an Argentine production written by Damian Szifron in 2005, was adapted by El Huevo Charlie Barrientos in 2025 as a Mexican film directed by Ariel Winograd. The action film stars Luis Gerardo Méndez, Memo Villegas, Christian Tappan, Bernardo Velasco, Verónica Bravo, and Noe Hernández.

Let me say up front that A Time for Bravery is a tense action film, but the subtle comedy injected at unexpected moments is what made me a fan. When Mariano Silverstein (Luis Gerardo Mendez), a high-strung psychologist who is doing community service for accidentally running over someone, is assigned to work with federal police officer Alfredo Diaz (Memo Vellegas), who is dealing with a cheating wife and anger issues, they unknowingly get involved with criminals and government agents who plan to steal and sell uranium to the highest bidder.

Conclusion

The bond between Silverstein and Diaz is strengthened after Silverstein realizes that he and Diaz face the same betrayal from those they love, and that is when A Time for Bravery becomes a delightful Mexican version of The French Connection meets Lethal Weapon. I loved the film so much that I talked my daughter, who does not like foreign films, into watching Time for Bravery. She also loved it.

One of the main reasons that I love foreign films is that you get to see how other countries handle crime and life in general. Right now, in these United States, we have a government that is horrendously attacking immigrants and shunning anything that is foreign, be it music, culture or films. If you don’t believe me, just watch how crazy people were with the Super Bowl Halftime Show. I assume people would be more open to other cultures if they watched more foreign films. This is why I subscribe to Netflix. Its catalogue of foreign films is impressive.
