In this week’s instalment of What’s Going On, Canada is showing up strong and stealing plenty of the spotlight. From rising voices to genre disruptors, there’s a real sense of momentum in the north. We’ve also got the latest from stars like mgk and Bowling for Soup. As always, if you dig what you hear, be sure to stream and follow these artists.
Mock Media – British Columbia-based rockers Mock Media are hitting back with “Rat Bastard,” a scrappy, hook-loaded tune that nods to The Cars while gleefully tearing shit up. It’s garage-pop swagger with a crooked grin, tight riffs, chant-along energy, and just a hint of 80s new wave. The title track teases their upcoming album Rat Bastard as a genre-hopping joyride, where art-rock meets pop, and they pull from everything from punk to eurodance. Consider this your warning: the boys from North Okanagan aren’t here to behave.

MEGGO – As a genre, glitch-folk is having a moment. Montreal’s very own MEGGO is right at the center of it. Her new single “jaws of life” feels like a memory buffering in real time with its mix of fragile indie-folk acoustics tangled with warped electronic textures and intimate ambient warmth. If this is where folk is headed, glitched, collaged, and emotionally raw, consider us fully locked in.

Bowling for Soup – We’ve got a bit of pop-punk inception for you! Bowling for Soup tap straight into the ever-growing wave of pop-punk nostalgia with their high-energy cover of Sum 41’s “In Too Deep.” Like the original version, it’s loud, cheeky, and built for sing-alongs, while injecting it with Bowling for Soup’s irreverent spirit. They’ve been doing a string of covers lately, so stay tuned to their socials to see what’s next.

mgk – Machine Gun Kelly links up with Fred Durst for “FIX UR FACE,” a snarling slice of nu-metal that harkens back to the days of Woodstock ’99 but with a modern-day sheen. All grit, distortion, and middle fingers up attitude, it’s a generational passing of the torch of sorts between mgk and the Limp Bizkit frontman. Is it any good? Not really, but you have to applaud the audacity.

Elysia Biro – Canadian jazz sensation Elysia Biro is taking over the game with Running From Nothing, her debut EP that feels both intimate and wise beyond her years. Blending jazz trio warmth with modern pop clarity, her songs are both deeply personal and radio-friendly. With a voice that carries both technical precision and ease, Biro positions herself at the front of Canada’s jazz-pop wave. Keep your eye on this one!
