As January winds down, the new music releases are coming fast and furious, and we’ve rounded up some of the best of the bunch for you. In this week’s instalment of What’s Going On, we’ve got a standout debut from Canadian comedy superstar Mae Martin, who is stepping into the spotlight as a singer-songwriter with a project that’s introspective and delightfully earnest. Plus, some of the hottest tunes from acts making waves around the world. This week’s roundup is packed with musical gems you won’t want to miss. As always, if you dig what you hear, be sure to stream and follow the artists.

Mae Martin – Award-winning comedian, producer, actor, and podcast host Mae Martin can now add singer-songwriter to their list of multi-hyphenate accolades with the announcement of their debut album I’m A TV. Set for release on February 27th via Universal Music Canada, this album marks Martin’s musical debut following their signing with Universal Music Canada. The album, produced by my favourite guys Jason Couse and Wes Marskell of The Darcys, is an indie rock exploration of millennial nostalgia that’s sure to be packed with vivid emotions and raw storytelling. Mae, known for their authenticity, describes the project as a deeply personal extension of their artistry, capturing a vulnerable, coming-of-age journey. Newly released tracks “Good Dream” and “Stowaway” highlight that Martin approaches music with the same openness they bring to their comedy.

flipturn – Florida band flipturn has released their new album Burnout Days, out now via Dualtone Records. The 12-track project blends infectious energy and shimmering soundscapes and gets deep as the band reflects on life on the road and navigating their mid-20s. We love a quarter-life crisis. Burnout Days also dives deep into lead singer Dillon Basse’s journey of growing up steeped in Celtic folk and his mother’s sobriety. Standout songs like “Rodeo Clown,” “Juno,” “Sunlight” and the album’s title track showcase why the five-piece from Florida is one of the most exciting young bands on the scene today.
