It’s a good Figure Friday and behold for I am risen to write about toys. Praise be.
Time being a flat circle and me being me, I am once again doing a column on Spider-Man stuff. Look, I hadn’t planned to get a new Spider-Man figure last time and I certainly didn’t know there was going to be yet another Spider-Man figure up for preorder this week. Now read on because he that believeth in great power also believeth in great responsibility.
MAFEX No.239 Spider-Man 2099 (Comic Ver.)
I legitimately did not think we’d be seeing a preorder for this one so early in the year. The last time I checked there were only all-grey prototypes that had been photographed at some trade show last year, so I figured we’d have some time.
But I ain’t angry at it, I was able to get my preorder in so I can now kick back and wait until February 2025 (or later!) when this guy is set to ship. Most importantly, this will likely be the final figure I need for my Spider-Man display which encompasses the big three movie Spider-Men and my favourite comic Spider-Man variations.
Here’s the blurb on this guy:

I absolutely loved Peter David’s Spider-Man 2099 comic book in all its various iterations. In fact, there’s a new one on stands right now, so check it out! This was the only one of Marvel’s 2099-themed books that actually worked which shouldn’t be surprising since I’m writing about it 34 years after the character’s debut and not, say, Ravage 2099.
The figure looks to be yet another MAFEX banger, in my opinion. However, I may be in the decided minority if certain subreddits are to be believed. A recent hobby of mine is peeking in on various internet forums to get the lay of the land and a lot of folks are upset that this figure isn’t a proper “thicc boi” and not as “caked up” as his big screen Spider-Verse counterpart.
Hey, a lid for every pot, I guess. Maybe, I’m the one in the wrong here since I don’t spend enough (or any, really) time thinking about Spider-Man 2099’s dumper. I guess I need to go do some research.
Let’s keep the Spidey train a-rollin’, shall we?
The MAFEX 075 and 185 figures are damn near perfect classic Spider-Man figures. But, as is my custom, I can find fault in almost everything…the eyes on the figure are just too big. It’s most definitely personal preference but I like my classic Spider-Man to have a more, well, classic look to it.
That’s where PVC Bakeshop comes in!
While perusing the discovery tab on Instagram one day last year I began to see various photos of what appeared to be a MAFEX Spider-Man but with a totally different head sculpt than the one I had recently purchased. At first I was mildly annoyed, thinking that a reissue of the figure was in the pipeline and I’d have to buy another figure to get what I was after, but I eventually wound up on @PVC_Bakeshop ’s page…and saw that I had missed my chance to order one of their custom 94 SM Sculpt heads.
Luckily for me (and I guess unlucky for you reading this), another run of this sculpt was offered and I was able to order one before the window closed earlier this week. All the photos I’ve seen of the sculpt look amazing, spectacular, and other appropriate adjectives and I cannot wait to get mine.
I’m also mildly concerned about dipping my toe into the bespoke action figure accessories pool but I guess this is just the evolution of a hobby (nervous laughter).
