We are thrilled to announce the exclusive premiere of the latest single from none other than the multi-talented actor and musician, Michael C. Hall and his band Princess Goes (formerly Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum). Yes, you read that right! Michael C. Hall, best known for his captivating roles in hit TV series like Dexter and Six Feet Under, is also a brilliant musician, and we’ve got the privilege of unveiling his band’s brand new track “Come of Age.”
While you may be best used to seeing Michael C. Hall delivering scene-stealing performances on-screen, it’s his musical prowess that has been wowing audiences in recent years. With Hall providing lyrics and vocals and rounded out by keyboardist Matt Katz-Bohen (Blondie, Cyndi Lauper) and drummer Peter Yanowitz (The Wallflowers, Morningwood), Princess Goes are known for their unconventional and unbound by any genre boundaries, drawing influence from ‘80s new wave, EDM, industrial and everything in between.
The new single, “Come of Age” also serves as the title track for the band’s second full-length album due out October 6th via In De Goot Recordings. This track follows the two previous singles “Shimmer” and “Blur”, and serves as the latest of what listeners can expect from the album.
“Come of Age” kicks off with shimmering synths that draw you from the very first note. Michael’s Bowie-esque vocals then take center stage, hooking you into the narrative of the song. The lyrics are introspective and thought-provoking, exploring themes of self-discovery, defiance, and standing strong when faced by people who want to see you fail. It’s a powerful sentiment that ensures this anthem will resonate with anyone who has ever felt the need to tap into their own f*ck you attitude. It’s no surprise that the album has been described as their most accessible work yet.
Speaking on how the track “Come of Age” came together, drummer Peter Yanowitz states:
“This beautiful track came out of Matt Katz Bohen’s incredible imagination. In Princess, we love the band Future Islands, and I think you can hear their influence in this tune. These are among my favorite lyrics Mike has written… too many lyrics to mention here, but one that sticks out to me is ‘Admit you wanna see me go down’. I really love the sentiment and the way the line unfolds in the delivery. I believe Mike intended it one way, but I also think about that line in the bigger picture, how so many people seem to want others to fail, maybe even want us to fail, and the delivery is seasoned with just the right amount of attitude… like u can be a hater, but we don’t give a fk… deal with it. One nice touch is that we recorded that distortion live on Mike’s vocal. It wasn’t an effect added later…the distortion is married to the performance. For the production geeks… the pre-amp we used on Mike’s vocal was an Avalon 727. The original song all started with a discarded Yamaha synthesizer Matt found in the garbage on the street in Brooklyn.”
Stay tuned for the release of the new Princess Goes album Come of Age, tomorrow via In De Goot Recordings.
