A huge weekend at the box office, with two new releases proving to be incredibly popular with audiences. So popular was one of that it managed to knock last week’s champ from the top spot! Find out how it all went down after the jump.
Not to be outdown, Channing Tatum’s sexy new stripper flick Magic Mike also got off to an exceptionally strong start, grossing $39 million to land in second place. Once again, this film is already a success, since it’s budget was just $7 million. It will definitely be interesting to see if the film can keep it up over the next few weeks (rimshot), but there’s no doubt there’s was magic at the box office this weekend for Tatum and director Steven Soderbergh.
The third big release of the weekend, Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection also performed well in the midst of summer blockbusters. Though it debut in fourth place (Madea flicks normally claim the top spot during it’s opening weekends), it’s gross of $26 million was certainly nothing to frown at. And like the other two releases already mentioned, the film has already made back its budget of $20 million.
As for the rest of the top five Pixar’s Brave suffered a 46% drop in its second weekend, bringing in $34 million for a North American gross of $131 million. Brave still has a ways to go here to match its $185 million budget. Meanwhile, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted landed in fifth with $11.8 million, bringing its total to a stellar $180 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
