Granny stumbled upon an adult animated anthology on Netflix that has left her both scratching her head and loving the series. Love, Death + Robots is an international cornucopia of genres, and I’m surprised that it isn’t a cult favourite…or is it?
Love Death + Robots
Love, Death + Robots is an adult animated series created by Tim Miller, produced by Blur Studio, and featuring individual episodes from animation studios around the world. There are four seasons. The first season was released in March 2019. Each episode, whether live action or animated, is connected to one or more concepts, including comedy, horror, science fiction, and fantasy.
The subject matter is so bizarre that I found myself mesmerized by each episode, with my favourite from season 1 being “Three Robots,” where, after humanity goes extinct, the robots discover that cats have been genetically engineered for intelligence and opposable thumbs. My second favourite episode was Season 4 Episode 1, featuring a concert with string puppets of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers singing “Can’t Stop.”
Conclusion
I have gone from paying a huge cable bill to only watching three streaming services: Netflix, BritBox, and AMC+, with my favourite being Netflix. Netflix has become the drop box for foreign films and films that other streaming services ignore or refuse to purchase. I might miss out on the big hits HBO Max and Prime Video offer, but I often find little gems on Netflix. Love, Death + Robots is not for children. There is nudity and violence; that said, if you are looking for something different, watch the series. But watch with an open mind.
