Who here doesn’t love the works of William Shakespeare? Hands down, you troublemaking illiterates at the back of the class!
If you enjoy stories, whether in comics, books, films or video games or even by word of mouth, you most assuredly love William Shakespeare. We all (should) know that his works have had an indelible effect on a vast amount of the pop culture that we consume today, in all sorts of genres: comedy, horror, drama…and even the all-American Western.
Wait. What?
Yessiree, pardner! Giddy-up…we’ve for a Shakespearian tale for you today, perfectly timed for #ShakespeareDay, which is, naturally, celebrated the world over!
Yesterday, Biff Bam Pop! published a great interview with award-winning writer, Anthony Del Col, who co-created today’s Wednesday Run feature: Romeo Vs. Juliet: A Kill Shakespeare Adventure. You can happily find it right here – go forth and read!
Kill Shakespeare, the original series, was first published to great acclaim nearly fifteen years ago and subsequently gave birth to a large fan base and a number of sequels, all of which have since been collected in trade and hardcover publications. Much like the old Bard’s tales themselves, the stories have found their way into a myriad of formats outside of traditional comics including board games and podcasts. And like the veritable renaissance, Kill Shakespeare, after a hiatus that lasted a number of years, finally returns today in a brand new 148-page trade paperback tale.
You don’t need to have read all of the previous publications in the series. Romeo Vs. Juliet: A Kill Shakespeare Adventure is a great starting point for any new reader and a wonderful continuation of characters and situations for those that are long-standing fans of the title. Still, that previously mentioned interview is a good primer to where this particular story begins.
And it’s a scintillating western in the vein of The Magnificent Seven!
Romeo Vs. Juliet begins with a very capable (and pregnant) Juliet, helping to protect a dusty border town nunnery from evil forces with only a small a band of disparate characters to aid her – all of whom you’ll know of if you’ve read your Shakespeare. But you’ve never seen like this before. Juliet, at the center of this tale, torn between her history with Romeo, who desperately hunts for her, and Hamlet, who longs for her. It’s quite the knife-wielding conundrum! Absent but still pulling strings, is the famous Bard who has his own motivations.
Vengeance and death is most assuredly at hand.
Written by Del Col, lavishly illustrated and coloured by Stefan Tosheff and published by Gemstone Publishing, Romeo Vs. Juliet: A Kill Shakespeare Adventure is a fast-paced, enthralling and entirely new take on the Bard’s various creations. Fans of comic book titles like Fables and Sandman and anything from the western genre (especially the ones where a team needs to be put together) will love being immersed in the Kill Shakespeare mythos.
And for those at the back of the class, no need to have a PhD in English studies. You’ll love the action, the motivations and, of course, the thirst for revenge between characters!
Holster your weapon, ready your poetic nerve and make the Wednesday Run to your local comic book shop or better bookstore to pick up Romeo Vs. Juliet: A Kill Shakespeare Adventure today!
The play’s the thing, wherein Shakespeare’s creations will capture the conscious of us readers!
