Outrun Collectibles Presents Figure Friday: Marvel Legends 20th Anniversary

In the summer of 2002, my girlfriend and I were shopping at a new Target location that had recently opened. I was on the hunt for a Dexster Jettster Attack of the Clones figure. While Dex remained elusive that day, what I found in his absence would forever change my life as a collector. Hanging on pegs for the first time were Marvel Legends Series 1 in their all-plastic packaging (R.I.P.): Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and… Toad. Twenty years and hundreds of figures later, Marvel Legends is celebrating its anniversary by updating the original lineup. There are some big changes to the overall presentation, but Hasbro has done a nice job of honoring the originals while bringing them up to (most of) today’s standards.

Marvel Legends 20th Anniversary Captain America

Celebrate 20 years of Toy Biz’ most enduring creation with Marvel Legends 20th Anniversary Retro Captain America 6-Inch Action Figure! Packaged on retro packaging inspired by what you opened way back in 2002, this 6-inch scale plastic action figure is loaded with the articulation and nostalgia you need. Cap includes diorama backdrop, alternate head, alternate hands, action effects, and shield.

This is the best “traditional” Captain America figure you can buy. He’s packed with three sets of hands, masked and unmasked heads and a brand-new shield that has ports for some great looking effects. Cap also comes with a Marvel Legends logo stand and a reversible cardboard backdrop. If you’re a mint on card collector, the presentation is near perfect and features heavier cardstock which is always a welcome addition.

There are minor nitpicks. Twenty years ago, Toy Biz packed in a comic book, a paper flag and a sculpted plastic base. While the reversible cardboard backdrop pays tribute to the original, it’s not as good as what we got back then. Additionally, I would have liked to see pinless knees and elbows to really take advantage of today’s technology. Some people have complained about the fact that without the effects, the shield has three holes in it. In my opinion, the good far outweighs the bad with this detail. I’d rather see some innovation as opposed to another plain shield.

Marvel Legends 20th Anniversary Iron Man

Celebrate 20 years of Toy Biz’ most enduring creation with Marvel Legends 20th Anniversary Retro Iron Man 6-Inch Action Figure! Packaged on retro packaging inspired by what you opened way back in 2002, this 6-inch scale plastic action figure is loaded with the articulation and nostalgia you need. 6-inch Mr. Stark figure includes unmasked head, alternate hands, diorama backdrop, and energy effects.

The star of this offering is the unmasked Tony Stark head. I don’t recall anyone ever fantasy casting Charles Bronson as Tony Stark, but the likeness is uncanny. If you’ve got a Death Wish, then this is the Iron Man figure for you! Same rules apply for Shell-Head that applied for Cap: No comic and no sculpted base, only a reversible Marvel Legends logo stand.

This would be a much better figure if we hadn’t just received A.I. Iron Man last year. While this figure has a new head and slight variations to the chest and waist, it can’t escape the fact it’s another bright red and yellow traditional looking Iron Man. If you passed on last year’s release, then this figure is worth a look.

Marvel Legends 20th Anniversary Hulk

Celebrate 20 years of Toy Biz’ most enduring creation with Marvel Legends 20th Anniversary Retro Hulk 6-Inch Action Figure! Packaged on retro packaging inspired by what you opened way back in 2002, this 6-inch scale plastic action figure is loaded with the articulation and nostalgia you need. 6-inch figure includes reversible backdrop and action diorama accessories.

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a traditional green and purple Hulk in the Legends line, so this hefty boy is a very welcomed sight. This is easily the best update of the three of these figures. The original Hulk figure had a passable head sculpt if you were in a dark room. This new version has not one excellent head sculpt, but two! Where he also exceeds his fellow Avengers is the inclusion of a sculpted base. Busted concrete with an impact crater and what looks like gamma radiation shooting out. It’s a great inclusion and rounds out an already impressive offering. This is the definitive Hulk figure. He’s big and bulky and I love him. You’ll love him too.

I’ll also point out that the fourth member of Series 1, Toad is also up for preorder. This looks to be a much-improved version of this figure and I’m looking forward to getting him in the near future.
