The Week in Horror: ‘The Munsters’, ‘Salad Fingers’, + more!

This week, we’ve got horror news about Rob Zombie’s The Munsters, including some exciting casting details, as well as a couple of trailers and the return of one of the internet’s first horror icons. Check it all out here!

Found footage religious horror isn’t exactly untrodden ground, but Ali Akbar Kamal’s Godforsaken, there’s certainly an unexpected feeling of spontaneity. That anything can happen. In the movie, an independent filmmaker goes back to his hometown to investigate a series of unexplained transformations related to his childhood friend’s funeral. When she inexplicably rises from the dead, the community has to grapple with the idea that all miracles aren’t necessarily holy.

Godforsaken stars Chad Tailor, Mélie B Rondeau, Katie Fleming, Chris Kelly, Domenic Derose, Nicole Fairbairn, JoAnn Bundock, and Flora Burke star. Godforsaken premieres on the Terror Films Channel on March 25 followed by a worldwide digital release April 8.

Coming out of the SXSW Midnighter program, Hanna Barlow and Kane Synes’ horror-comedy SISSY has been acquired by Shudder and should be released on the streaming service later this year.

From the release, “SISSY stars Aisha Dee and Barlow as Cecilia and Emma, who had been tween-age BFFs who were never going to let anything come between them — until Alex (Emily De Margheriti) arrived on the scene. Twelve years later, Cecilia is a successful social media influencer living the dream of an independent, modern millennial woman, until she runs into Emma for the first time in over a decade. After reconnecting, Emmy invites Cecilia on her bachelorette weekend at a remote cabin in the mountains, where Alex proceeds to make Cecilia’s weekend a living hell.”

We got some fun news about Rob Zombie’s The Munsters remake this week – firstly from Bloody Disgusting that the film will receive a PG rating, which is to be expected for anything in line with the original series. The PG rating is for “macabre and suggestive material, scary images and language.”

But more importantly, we found out that Cassandra “Elvira” Peterson would be joining the cast in the role of “Barbara Carr, the #1 real estate agent in all of Mockingbird Heights” She joins Sherri Moon Zombie as Lily Munster, Jeff Daniel Philips as Herman Munster, and Daniel Roebuck as Grandpa Munster.

Zombie dropped the news on Instagram this week:

True 90s kids (or early 2000s, at least) will remember the weird flash animations by David Firth. The macabre hand-drawn little shorts like Salad Fingers made the rounds on message boards and e-mail from 2004 to 2007, before anyone ever heard of the term ‘meme’ and certainly before YouTube was as ubiquitous as it is today. Well, it’s nearly two decades later and Firth is back with a new Salad Fingers video to tantalize your inner freakshow.

This one’s called Post Man and is the 12th video starring our green-fingered friend. In it, he agonizes over the rotting dog corpse that’s taken his job at the postal sorting facility. But, love finds a way – a deeply, deeply disturbing way. Check it out here if you’re inclined to be seriously unsettled. It’s got all the vibes of the original videos, even 20 years removed from them.
