1997’s Ultra was the first Depeche Mode album to be released following the departure of Alan Wilder from the group. It’s also notable for being the first project where the band didn’t have a hand in the production as that was left to Tim Simenon of Bomb The Bass fame. With Wilder’s leaving and frontman Dave Gahan having a near-fatal overdose, Ultra is the portrait of a band reckoning with its inner turmoil, picking up the pieces and turning them into a sonic masterpiece.
