Gilbert Speaks on SyFy’s “SurrealEstate”

Every house has spirits. It doesn’t matter if the home is brand new or hundreds of years old…every home has spirits. When people are either selling or buying a home, they rely on real estate agents to help them. But what if the problem with the home isn’t structural, plumbing, or roofing? What if your problem is ghosts? SyFy has a new show on this topic called SurrealEstate.

Plot

SurrealEstate is a Canadian paranormal drama that just recently premiered the past summer on SyFy. The series stars Tim Rozon, Sarah Levy, Adam Korson, Savannah Basley, and Maurice Dean Wint.

SurrealEstate sees agent Luke Roman (Tim Rozon) and his group specializing in selling haunted properties. Most people when shopping for a new home, chose that home first because of the feeling they get as they walk into the home. No matter the cost or size, if you are focused on your surroundings, you will pick up the energy of the home be it happy or depressive. On the pilot episode, Luke Roman is hired by Megan Donovan (Tennille Read) to investigate the home that she inherited from her grandfather.

It seems that dear departed grandpa forgot to mention that his home is haunted, but are the spirits playful or dangerous? Megan is frightened because of a few troubling episodes where the lit fireplace tries to toast her, and where items are flying off the walls. Megan wants to sell the house, but she needs Roman to make it safe for the new buyers.

Luke Roman has a special team, which includes August Ripley (Maurice Dean Hint), who has special goggles that enable him to see the dead; ex-priest Father Phil Orley (Adam Korson), and tech savvy office manager Zoey L’Enfant (Savannah Basley). The team brings on a new agent, Susan Ireland (Sarah Levy) and she has no idea the type of work that Roman’s team does.

While Father Phil and August perform tests at the Donovan home, where the test results are through the roof, they encounter a demonic beast in the basement. In the meantime, Luke and Susan are investigating the Lenore home where a competitive real estate agent, Rita Weiss (Alison Brooks) begrudgingly asks for help with a poltergeist.

Conclusion

Luke Roman and his team are able to help both Donovan and the Lenore family with their ghostly problems, in this first episode, which is as it should be if you know what you are dealing with and how to distinguish between a demonic or run-of-the-mill spirit. SurrealEstate has ten episodes, and even though I enjoyed the pilot, I want to watch a few more episodes before giving my 100% approval.

Do real estate agents ever encounter a hard to sell home due to spirit activity? They might not be willing to talk about this, because their commissions depend on a sale, but yes, sometimes spirits are unwilling or afraid of welcoming a new family into the home. This does cause a problem because the real estate agent then has to deal with the new owners’ phone calls about things that were not listed in the mortgage.

This is where my team and I come in. People will contact me to come investigate and bless their home before they purchase it. Remember that I said that most people can sense the spirits of the house. When I physically tour a home, I will walk through to see what I pick up. For the most part, I know that whatever spirit is lingering there is friendly, and most of the time, not even aware of the living. They are living their lives on the other side of the veil. I let them know that new people are coming in, and for the spirits to allow the intrusion. Then I walk through and bless every room in the house from attic to basement. I inform my clients about the spirit or spirits that do share their house, and they seem comforted that someone on the other side is watching over them. All is good.

If I do encounter an angry spirit, I try to figure out why that spirit is upset, calm the spirit, and then ask that they share the home with the new family. When I am not able to come to the house physically, I will give my clients two powerful prayers to say in all the rooms of the house. If I encounter any demonic presence, I ask the family to put a call out to a priest that has been trained in demonology and has all the tools to fight this hound from hell.

Just so you know, my house is packed with spirits. Visitors to my home can hear them, and sometimes see them. My ghosts are mostly family, and they keep me safe…and one of the spirits even fixed my basement light…yes, you can ask them to help you.

You can watch SurrealEstate on Friday nights at 10pm on the Sci-Fi station.
