This week brings exciting casting news for the new Chucky TV series starring Jennifer Tilly, an animated adaptation of George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, and yes, COCAINE BEAR! I’ve also got the scoop on where you can first get a glimpse of the new Halloween (spoiler: you may want to buy a plane ticket to Italy) and much more!
I know, it’s been a minute since I reported anything on Elisabeth Banks’ production of Cocaine Bear, and you good folks must be absolutely climbing the walls from withdrawal. Well, we got some big casting details from the director herself via Twitter, and it looks like Ray Liotta, O’Shea Jackson, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Alden Ehrenreich, and Keri Russell are all on board with the project.
No word on which, if any, of these fine actors will be playing the bear who ingests a amssive amount of cocaine in the true story from 1985 Kentucky, but we’ll keep you posted if we find out.
In more casting news, Jennifer Tilly dropped some images from the set of CHUCKY, a new TV series based on the original spooky doll. Signed on for the series are a returning Brad Dourif as Chucky, Christine Elise as Kyle, Devon Sawa, Fiona Dourif as Nica Pierce, Bjorgvin Arnarson, Jacob Breedon, and Zackary Arthur. In the series, Chucky continues his reign of terror, but “the arrival of enemies — and allies — from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.”
I’ve reported on Netflix’s Blood Red Sky in this space before, but the airborne thriller has a brand-new trailer that, if you’re not familiar with the film’s premise, takes a pretty wild left turn at the end. I’m more and more excited for this project with each passing week, so have a look at the trailer ahead of the Blood Red Sky‘s Netflix debut on July 23.
On the heels of a pretty damn cool trailer last week, Deadline reported that David Gordon Green’s Halloween Kills will have it’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, which runs from September 1-11 this year. In addition, the festival will award it’s prestigious Golden Lion award for Lifetime Achievement to Halloween star Jamie Lee Curtis on account of her continuing achievements in badassery onscreen.
Curtis said, about the news, that “I am incredibly humbled to be honored in this way by the Venice International Film Festival. It seems impossible to me that I’ve been in this industry long enough to be receiving ‘Lifetime Achievement’ recognition, and to have it happen now, with Halloween Kills, is particularly meaningful to me. Halloween — and my partnership with Laurie Strode — launched and sustained my career, and to have these films evolve into a new franchise that is beloved by audiences around the world was, and remains, a gift. Italian Cinema has always honored and heralded the genre that gave me my career, so I couldn’t be more proud and happy to accept this award from the Venice International Film Festival on behalf of Laurie and all the courageous heroines of the world who stand tall in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles and refuse to yield.”
District 9 and Elysium director Neil Blomkamp’s got a brand new and pretty cool-looking poster for his upcoming thriller, Demonic. The film will release on August 20, and the stunning mashup of horror and sci-fi on the poster alone are very interesting, but there’s also a trailer for you to check out if you’re feeling froggy.
Adam Robitel and Gavin Heffernan, who produced the underrated horrors Escape Room and The Taking of Deborah Logan are working on a secretive but intriguing new project called The Craving, according to Deadline. It’s a series for Netflix, produced by Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures, and purportedly “explores the real-world horrors of addiction through a genre lens. It centers around a female sheriff in a Colorado ski town besieged by an unprecedented new threat.” This is definitely one to keep an eye on.
An animated adaptation of the absolutely seminal Night of the Living Dead from the late George Romero is going full steam ahead, and sounds like one of the most interesting projects on the horror-izon. Dread Central dropped the goods on the cast for the film, and it looks freakin’ spectacular. Lending their voice talents to Night of the Animated Dead are; Katharine Isabelle as Barbara, James Roday Rodriguez as Tom, Josh Duhamel as Harry Cooper, Jimmi Simpson as Johnny, Dulé Hill as Ben, Katee Sackhoff as Judy, Will Sasso as Sheriff McClelland, and Nancy Travis as Helen Cooper. To call that star-studded is almost an understatement. When I have details about a release of this thing, you’ll be the first to know, friends.
Y’all already know about the re-release of the Monster Cereals this year, just in time for Halloween, but did you know that Count Chocula, Boo Berry, Fruit Brute, and Frankenberry are getting fruit snacks as well? That’s right, pals, time to put your cardiologist on notice because this spooky season is about to get a lot sweeter with these lunchbox “fruit” snacks. Kinda bullshit that Count Chocula is a grape thing instead of, you know, chocolate, but what can you do? No idea where you can actually get these, but maybe if you knock on the door of your local haunted house on October 31, a skeletal hand will reach out with a pack for you.
Rubber, Wrong, and Deerskin filmmaker and musician Quentin Dupieux is back with a new wack-a-doodle film called Mandibles. The film is about two friends who, naturally, decide to train the giant fly they find in their trunk, and is described as a twisted road movie and screwball comedy. I am an unabashed fan of Dupieux’s work and this looks as ambitious a film as he’s ever taken on. Mandibles stars Grégoire Ludig, David Marsais, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Coralie Russier and India Hair. Check out the first trailer ahead of the film’s release on July 23.
Korean horror The 8th Night dropped on Netflix a couple days ago and looks to be absolutely wild. “The 8th Night centers on a life-or-death battle spanning eight days to prevent the breaking of the seal that restrains “That Which Must Not Awaken.” Once awakened, it can cross the stepping stones to wreak havoc on this world. With prayer beads in one hand and an ax in the other, a monk hunts down a millennia-old spirit that’s possessing humans and unleashing hell on Earth.” Sounds great, right? Well if you’re still not sold on adding this one to your queue, here’s a trailer to wet your whistle.
