‘The Grudge’ Returns But Will Anybody Care?

It could be a spooky first weekend of 2020 at the box office, but I’m doubting one new release will be enough to take down The Force.

The Grudge is a reboot/remake of both the Japanese horror series and the American remake from the 2000s. It’s been a while (eleven years) since The Grudge 3, and I’m skeptical that any horror fans have really been waiting for a new iteration of the franchise, just like nobody was lining up for the recent return of The Ring. What The Grudge has going for it is it’s the last weekend of winter holidays so teens might be interested in something scary before heading back to school. However, it’s unlikely that the film will move the needle in any significant way. Look for a fifth place debut for The Grudge with $8 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will continue in the top spot with $35 million. Jumanji: The Next Level will be in second place with $15 million. Little Women will grab third place with $11 million, while Frozen II will be in fourth place with $10.5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – $35 million
2) Jumanji: The Next Level – $15 million
3) Little Women – $11 million
4) Frozen II – $10.5 million
5) The Grudge – $8 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
