Holiday Gift Guide 2019: Television Shows and Movies on Blu-ray

There’s still time, there’s still time! There are some outstanding Blu-rays that you can order for the TV and movie lovers in your life. Here’s a rundown of some excellent choices you can’t go wrong giving to the pop culture lover in your life this holiday season:

TELEVISION

Batman Beyond: The Complete Series Deluxe Limited Edition
Warner Brothers

BBSet.jpgJust in time for Batman’s 80th anniversary, this six-disc set will go oh so nicely beside last year’s limited edition Batman: The Animated Series collection. A few years after making its way onto DVD, Batman Beyond looks better than ever in this Blu-ray set that also comes with the Return of the Joker feature film, a limited-edition Batman Beyond Funko Pop, five lenticular art cards and the complete offering on Digital Download as well. The packaging is gorgeous and the series is well worth owning for longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Gotham: The Complete Series
Warner Brothers

Gotham.jpg

This year saw the fifth and final season of Gotham, the FOX television that looked at the story of comic’s most corrupt city from the point of view of future Commissioner Jim Gordon, along with the tale of a young Bruce Wayne and the formation of the future Batman’s rogue’s gallery. The series developed its own mythos separate from the comics or movies and became well-regarded by Batfans. This Blu-ray box set features 18 discs, essentially all the separate season sets collected in one nice looking package. Between Gotham: The Complete Series and Batman Beyond, Batfans can be well-serviced this holiday season.

Gravity Fall: The Complete Series
Shout Factory

Gravity Falls

This was the year that the DisneyXD series Gravity Falls hit our house hard. My daughter the Princess is absolutely obsessed with this show, thanks to the smart writing and memorable characters. It made our list last year as well, but I was told it had to make a return for 2019. Fans of shows like Twin Peaks and The X-Files will find lots to love whether they’re watching Gravity Falls with or without kids. Trust us on this one – you’re going to love it.

Breaking Bad: The Complete Series
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

The release earlier this year of the Breaking Bad movie El Camino was the perfect time for a reissue of the entire series on Blu-ray. This new edition comes in a spiffy new box with cases to match, along with 55 hours of bonus features, including a two-hour documentary. And just so you can gasp like everyone else I know does when I tell them, I have yet to watch Breaking Bad, so this set is going to keep me busy over the holiday season.

MOVIES

IT: Chapter Two
Warner Bros Home Entertainment

It Chapter Two.jpgWhile it may not have made as much money as IT: Chapter One, I truly think this second chapter is as good if not better than the first. While it’s not as scary, true, I felt like the adult cast all delivered remarkable performances in what I consider to be the Big Chill of horror films. The 4K and Blu-ray versions come complete with a documentary that tells the behind-the-scenes tale of making both chapters. This is pretty much a must-have for horror fans.

Ad Astra
20th Century Fox

AD Astra.jpgIt’s a shame that Ad Astra underperformed at the box office because director James Gray and star Brad Pitt put together what I think is one of the best films of the year. I wound up watching it at home and I can tell you that the opening ten minutes are as good as anything you’ll ever see on screen. I wish I’d experienced it in theatres, but thems the breaks. Don’t miss out on adding this Apocalypse Now-in-space film to your collection. It’s one of the best films of 2019.

Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

once.jpgHere’s another one of 2019’s best, newly arrived on 4K, Blu-ray and digital. Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are absolutely outstanding in this tale of Hollywood at the end of the 1960s, while Margot Robie lights up the screen in every scene she’s in as Sharon Tate. I’m of the mind that this is one of Quentin Tarantino’s greatest achievements, ranking right up there with Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. The home entertainment version includes bonus scenes and lots of featurettes.
