It was a big weekend for the latest Pixar film, even if it wasn’t the record-breaking extravaganza we thought it would be.
Toy Story 4 debut on top of the box office with an estimated $118 million. While definitely a solid arrival, that number is far off from what pundits were predicting (including us). Most agree that the reason the number is off is that Pixar released Toy Story 4 a week after their traditional Father’s Day weekend deliveries, which means fewer families running out to theatres. At the end of the day, all this means is that the movie will have to use its legs to make oodles of cash it’s expected to bring in, rather than being frontloaded.
The Princess, her mother, and I went saw Toy Stort 4 in IMAX on Friday, and I was legitimately surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The story is absolutely wonderful, the pacing superb, and the animation is as good as it gets. As well, there were some seriously solid Stanley Kubrick shout-outs throughout the film. Toy Story 4 is definitely worth seeing in theatres asap.
Debuting in second place with $14 million was the remake of Child’s Play. This is a decent number for the well-reviewed horror flick. I took in an afternoon screening on Saturday and, though the movie runs just 88 minutes, they felt like extremely long minutes to me. Yes, it’s funny, and there are some great gory scenes, but there are also people doing stupid things, which is a trigger for this horror fan. I suppose I’ll just have to wait until July 3rd and Midsommer to get my scare on.
As for the rest of the top five, Disney’s Aladdin was in third place with $12 million. Men In Black: International fell hard to fourth place with $10.7 million, while The Secret Life of Pets 2 closed things out in fifth place with $10.2 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Toy Story 4 – $175 million
2) Child’s Play – $20 million
3) Men In Black: International – $15 million
4) The Secret Life of Pets 2 – $12 million
5) Disney’s Aladdin – $11.5 million
And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:
1) Toy Story 4 – $118 million

4) Men In Black: International– $10.7 million
5) The Secret Life of Pets 2 – $10.2 million
