As some dragon show on cable winds down, Hulu has announced a series based on Stephen King’s novel, Eyes of the Dragon. Eyes was King’s foray into fantasy, which I haven’t read since seventh grade. Honestly, I don’t remember anything about it, other than it was ‘fine.’ That said, I’ve never been much of a fantasy fan and this is probably awesome news. Based on how good Castle Rock is, Eyes of the Dragon will likely kick ass.
John Carpenter was honored at Cannes Film Festival this week, which reminds me of this quote by Carpenter himself: “In England, I’m a horror movie director. In Germany, I’m a filmmaker. In the US, I’m a bum.” That’s an important quote to remember if you ever wonder why it’s been so long since one of the last great living filmmakers of our favorite genre has made a movie.
The Abominable Dr. Phibes turns 48 today! This 1971 Vincent Price classic still holds up as a weird and freaky chapter in the latter half of Price’s career. Check out the trailer below!
IFC Midnight has acquired Larry Fessenden’s modern Frankenstein film, Depraved, for wide distribution. Expect this instant classic to hit theaters and VOD later this year. You can read my interview with Fessenden about the film here. Depraved is an amazing film and honestly my favorite adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic work to date. I can’t wait for it to get in front of a wider audience, because it certainly deserves one!
