Tim Burton’s ‘Dumbo’ Takes Flight This Weekend at the Box Office

Remember when a new Tim Burton film was cause for celebration and excitement? I don’t know about you, but it’s been a while since I’ve felt the desire to see what he’s come up with on the big screen (though I am someone that really did love his take on Dark Shadows back in 2012). However. there’s a good chance that, at least this weekend, there will be a lot of folks excited to see Burton’s live-action take on Disney’s Dumbo.

The film, based on the 1941 animated classic, features an outstanding cast, including Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Alan Arkin, and Eva Green, along with a score from Burton’s longtime composer, Danny Elfman. None of the actors on their own are enough to bring in a big audience, but the Disney crowd will no doubt come out to see the film, at least on opening weekend. Reviews haven’t been kind, though, and Dumbo‘s story can be traumatic to some children, so it remains to be seen if the film can deliver huge numbers; I’m skeptical. Look for Dumbo to debut in first place with $55 million.

As for the rest of the top five, last week’s horror hero Us should continue its winning ways, hitting second place with $40 million. That’s less than a 50% drop, which is normally the minimum that a horror movie drops, but Jordan Peele’s film isn’t playing like a typical genre flick. Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel will be in third place with $22 million. Five Feet Apart will grab fourth place with $5.5 million, while Wonder Park will close things out in fifth place with $5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Dumbo – $55 million
2) Us – $40 million
3) Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel – $22 million
4) Five Feet Apart – $5.5 million
5) Wonder Park – $5 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
