This weekend sees the release of a few new films, but it’s unlikely that any of them will be able to unseat Aquaman from the top of the box office.
First up is A Dog’s Way Home, a family friendly movie from the author of A Dog’s Purpose. Now, while this will likely be the choice for families who want an afternoon or evening out, I have to say that this movie had one of the worst trailers I’ve seen in a while. Not because the film looks particularly bad, mind you. On the contrary, it looks sweet and appears to have its heart in the right place. The problem is that the trailer seemed to reveal almost the entire film, with few if any surprises. I don’t know if there’s some sort of Shyamalan twist that A Dog’s Way Home has planned, but if not, the trailer made every beat of the film crystal clear. Regardless, look for it to debut in second place with $13 million.
Also new this week is The Upside, starring Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston, and Nicole Kidman. I don’t think a new Hart film is going to light up theatres this weekend, based on the sort of publicity the actor’s been receiving over the last few weeks. Reviews are abysmal as well, so look for a fairly lacklustre debut in third place for The Upside with $12.5 million
As for the rest of the top five, Aquaman will be in number one for the fourth week in a row with $20 million. Mary Poppins Returns will grab fourth place with $10 million, while the Golden Globe winning Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse will close things out in fifth placer with $9 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Aquaman – $20 million
2) A Dog’s Way Home – $13 million
3) The Upside – $12.5 million
4) Mary Poppins Returns – $10 million
5) Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse – $9 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
