This weekend sees the release of one of the most anticipated films of 2018 with Halloween, a direct sequel to the 1978 John Carpenter classic starring Jamie Lee Curtis and directed by David Gordon Green. Make no mistake, this movie is going to be making all the money.
Reviews have been through the roof for Halloween (you can read ours from TIFF 2018 here, where I refer to the film as ‘a superior sequel’), thanks to the strong script from Gordon, Danny McBride and Jeff Fradley, and those good notices are certainly going to push the audience into seats, including some who may have never even seen the original. However, the reason this film is going to be even bigger than some may think is because of Jamie Less Curtis. The actor has been everywhere promoting Halloween, and doing an excellent job explaining why this is more than a a stock horror film. Citing Laurie Strode as her favourite character, Curtis is letting cinema-goers know that this a film for the times, about a woman dealing with severe trauma, and facing it down with power. I’m of the mind that Curtis is due at least an Oscar nomination for this performance, and I think audiences are definitely going to agree there. It’s the time of the season, and Halloween should debut in first place with $75 million, a franchise best.
As for the rest of the top five, A Star Is Born will be in second place with $20 million, with Venom following close behind in third place with $19 million. Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween will be in fourth place with $11 million, while First Man will close things out in fifth place with $9.5 million.
