First of all, thank to my brother Jeff Martin for covering for me on Friday, as I was in Montreal to see Paul McCartney (great show, by the way – go buy his new album, Egypt Station). Jeff predicted that The House With A Clock In It’s Walls would top the box office, and he was right.
The first kids film from horror director Eli Roth debut with a very solid $27 million. It wasn’t quite as high as predicted here, but still a strong number for a kid-centric horror flick. Star Jack Black could very well have found a new niche for himself in these sorts off movies, as Goosehumps from a few years ago also did well with the target audience.
As for the rest of the top five, A Simple Favor actually rose a spot week to week, from third to second, bringing in an estimated $10.4 million. The Nun was so close behind it in third place with $10.25 million. Meanwhile, last week’s number one film, The Predator, had a huge 65% drop, bringing in just $8.7 million. Crazy Rich Asians closed things out in fifth place with $6.5 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) The House With A Clock In Its Walls – $38 million
2) Life Itself – $18 million
3) The Predator – $14 million
4) The Nun – $12 million
5) A Simple Favor – $7.2 million
And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:
1) The House With A Clock In Its Walls – $26.8 million
2) A Simple Favor – $10.4 million
3) The Nun – $10.25 million
4) The Predator – $8.7 million
5) Crazy Rich Asians – $6.5 million
Next weekend sees the release of Small Foot, Hell Fest, and Night School. Be sure to check back on Friday to see our predictions!
