It was an incredible weekend at the box office, far from the dog days that I anticipated. What happened? Well, Crazy Rich Asians did something crazy to retain the top spot.
The film brought in an estimated $25 million in its second weekend, dropping a nearly unprecedented 6% week to week. That sort of hold is unheard of these days, and one has to look back more than twenty years to when The Sixth Sense (1999) and Forrest Gump (1994) posted stronger holds. Crazy Rich Asians is resonating with audiences, and its nice to see a real success story in what’s usually a lacklustre time for theaters.
As for the rest of the top five, The Meg was in second place with $13 million, as it crossed the $100 million mark this weekend. Debuting in third with a lackluster $10 million is the DOA Happytime Murders. Mission: Impossible – Fallout was in fourth place with $8 million; by this time next week it should top $200 million. Finally, Disney’s Christopher Robin closed things out in fifth place with $6.3 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Crazy Rich Asians – $18 million
2) The Meg – $11 million
3) The Happytime Murders – $10 million
4) Mission: Impossible – Fallout – $8 million
5) Disney’s Christopher Robin – $6.5 million
