When you’re wrong, you’re wrong, and this weekend, I was definitely off with my box office predictions. Here’s what went down:
Lesson learned – never underestimate the power of Blumhouse. Their Halloween box office entry, Happy Death Day, had an outstanding opening this weekend, bringing in an estimated $26.5 million. This is the third win for the production company, following Split and Get Out. The PG-13 rating definitely helped get teens into the theatre, as did the Scream meets Groundhog Day concept. Reviews have been decent as well, and throw in the time of year, and it makes perfect sense that Happy Death Day was able to debut in the top spot at the box office.
As for the rest of the top five, Blade Runner 2049 fell to second place, bringing in an estimated $15.1 million. It’s hard not to feel bummed out about how the film is performing in North American, as it is quality and ambitious. However, run time, its R-rating, and an IP that hasn’t crossed over as much as many thought have worked against its success.
Jackie Chan’s The Foreigner debut in third place with $12.4 million, not a bad showing at all for an actor that doesn’t equal big box office in North America. It was in fourth place with $6.47 million, while The Mountain Between Us closed things out in fifth with $5.6 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Blade Runner 2049 – $19.5 million
2) Happy Death Day – $18 million
3) The Foreigner – $8 million
4) It – $6 million
5) My Little Pony: The Movie – $5 million
And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:
1) Happy Death Day – $26.5 million
2) Blade Runner 2049 – $15.1 million
3) The Foreigner – $12.4 million
4) It – $6.47 million
5) The Mountain Between Us – $5.6 million
