It was a bit of a race for the top spot at the box office this weekend, but a holdover managed to remain on top, even as a new family friendly film tried to take its place. Here’s what went down:
Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk remained at the top of the box office for a second weekend in a row, bringing in an estimated $28.1 million. The film has already grossed over $100 million, and dropped less than 44% week to week. It will likely give up the top spot next weekend, when Stephen King’s The Dark Tower arrives.
As for the rest of the top five, The Emoji Movie managed to overcome horrendous reviews to debut in second place with $25.7 million. This one will probably sink hard if word of mouth has its way.
Girls Trip was in third place with $20 million, while Atomic Blonde debut in fourth place with $18.5 million. I definitely thought audiences would come out in larger numbers for this well-reviewed action film. The film only cost $30 million, so it should be able to make back its budget in North America, but I’d say that this debut is still a disappointment.
Spider-Man: Homecoming closed things out in fifth place with $13.5 million. The film should pass the $300 million mark next weekend.
