One film is guaranteed the number one spot at the box office this weekend, but the question is how much will it make, and will that number be significant or simply so-so. Here’s our prediction:
Tim Burton had a built-in fan base, especially when goes weird, so his new film, an adaptation of the 2012 children’s novel Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, definitely has that going for it. However, few would disagree that the director has lost some of his mojo over recent years (not to mention his box office clout as well), and with middling reviews so far, Miss Peregrine’s is far from a surefire box office hit. Look for a first place showing with $32 million, which will be a decent start, but with a budget of $110 million, not the one the studio will be looking for.
Also opening this weekend is Deepwater Horizon, about the 2010 oil rig explosion that killed 11 men. Reviews have been stellar so far, and star Mark Wahlberg is typically a box office draw, though this film is certainly a far cry from Transformers territory and may prove to not be a draw for a younger demo. Look for a second place showing with $25 million.
As for the rest of the top five, The Magnificent Seven will be in third place with $19 million. Storks will fly into fourth place with $13 million, while Sully will be in fifth place with $8 million.

1) Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – $32 million
