“Suicide Squad” Scores at the Box Office

It was a big weekend at the box office, as Suicide Squad managed to hold off bad reviews to bring in some decent money in its debut. Here’s what went down:

Suicide Squad debuted with an estimated $135 million to land at the top of the box office. It also beat the August record previously held by Guardians of the Galaxy with $94.3 million. This is a strong showing, especially in the face of the terrible reviews the film received. The big question now is how bad will next weekend’s drop be – anything more than 60% will be a disaster.

As for the rest of the top five, Jason Bourne dropped 61% (not good) to fall to number two with $22 million. Bad Moms was in third place with $14.2 million, with The Secret Life of Pets behind in it fourth place with $11.5 million. Star Trek Beyond closed things off in fifth place with $10.2 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Suicide Squad – $135 million
2) Jason Bourne – $25 million
3) Bad Moms – $14 million
4) Star Trek Beyond – $10 million
5) The Secret Life of Pets – $8 million

And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:

1) Suicide Squad – $135 million
2) Jason Bourne – $22 million
3) Bad Moms – $14.2 million
4) The Secret Life of Pets – $11.5 million
5) Star Trek Beyond – $10.2 million

Next weekend sees the release of Sausage Party and Pete’s Dragon. Be sure to check back on Friday to see our predictions!

  1. It’ll be interesting to see if SS’s initial success was everyone ‘snark-watching’ … (a much better term than ‘hate-watching’) 🙂
