Keanu looks to take the crown from The Jungle Book

It’s the calm before the storm, as we’re one weekend away before Captain America: Civil War arrives in theatres. What film will stake its claim at the top of the heap before that? Here’s our predictions:

Keanu is a comedy offering from cult-comic fan favourites Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele aka Key & Peel. The film, focusing on kidnapping of the title-cat, has been getting decent reviews, and adults looking for a comedy this weekend will likely find this one favourable. However, while the duo have a built in audience, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will translate into box office dollars. Look for a second place debut for Keanu but with only about $12.5 million.

Also opening this weekend is Mother’s Day from director Garry Marshall and starring an ensemble cast that includes Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston and Kate Hudson. The film will likely be the date movie of choice this weekend, but buzz has been fairly non-existent so far. Look for a third place debut with $10 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Disney’s The Jungle Book should have no trouble holding on to the top spot at the box office for a third weekend in a row. Look for it to bring in $42 million. The Huntsman: Winter’s War will be in fourth place with $8.5 million, while Barbershop: The Next Cut will close things out in fifth place with $6.5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Disney’s The Jungle Book – $42 million
2) Keanu – $12.5 million
3) Mother’s Day – $10 million
4) The Huntsman: Winter’s War – $8.5 million
5) Barbershop: The Next Cut – $6.5 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
