Ride Along 2 knocks Star Wars from the top spot at the box office

And lo there came a day when the biggest movie in North American history finally vacated the top spot at the box office, making way for a new number one. Here’s what went down:

As expected Ride Along 2 debut at the top of the box office this weekend with $34.1 million. This is down from the original’s $41 million, but still a healthy number for the Kevin Hart/Ice Cube team-up. It’s doubtful that Ride Along 2 will equal the original’s take, mind you, so this may be the end of that franchise.

As for the rest of the top five, The Revenant had an excellent second weekend in wide release, bringing in $31.4 million, thanks in no small part to its multiple Oscar nominations and wins at last week’s Golden Globes.

After five weeks, Star Wars: The Force Awakens dropped to third place, but still brought in a solid $26.2 million. The film’s total currently stands at $859.2 million, and it should end its run over the $900 million mark.

Finishing things out, 13 Hours debut with a lacklustre $16.8 million, while Daddy’s Home closed things out in fifth place with $8.98 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Ride Along 2 – $42 million
2) The Revenant – $33 million
3) Star Wars: Force Awakens – $32.5 million
4) 13 Hours – $20 million
5) Daddy’s Home – $13 million
