The Revenant looks to unseat Star Wars from the top of the box office

This weekend is the Golden Globe Awards, which should give us a decent idea as to which way the Academy Awards will end up leaning once the nomination are announced. One film that could do well for itself both at the Globesand the Oscars goes into wide release this weekend, but will it be able to take down the world conquering Star Wars? Here’s our prediction:

The Revenant is the new film from Academy Award-winning director Alejandro González Iñárritua and stars the perpetually Oscar-snubbed Leonardo DiCaprio, stars as a frontiersman and fur trapper in the 1820s. Reviews for the film have been kind, citing the cinematography and DiCaprio’s own performance, which should be enough to get audiences into theatres for a film that’s subject matter doesn’t exactly scream big box office. Look for a second place debut for The Revenant with $26 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will continue to bring in the bucks and hold on to the top spot with $52 million. Daddy’s Home will be in third place with $17 million. The Hateful Eight will grab fourth place with $10 million, while Sisters will close things out in fifth place with $6 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $52 million
2) The Revenant – $26 million
3) Daddy’s Home – $17 million
4) The Hateful Eight – $10 million
5) Sisters – $6 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
