The Perfect Guy and The Visit Battle for the top spot

It was a tight, tight race at the box offic ethis weekend, and things could change slightly when the actuals arrive Monday morning, but for now there’s a new number one movie in North America, and it’s not what we predicted. Here’s what went down:

The Perfect Guy managed to trumpt the still triumphant return of M. Night Shymalan to the thriller genre, bringing in an estimated $26.7 million versus The Visit‘s $25.5 million. Both numbers are very, very solid debuts. Shymalan should be especially pleased that The Visit found both an audience and some critical support. Perhaps the director will consider going small again for whatever he has coming up.

As for the rest of the top five, War Room dropped to number three with $7.4 million, while A Walk In The Woods hit fourth place with $4.6 million. Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation closed things out in fifth place with $4.1 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) The Visit – $20 million
2) The Perfect Guy – $12 million
3) War Room – $6 million
4) A Walk In The Woods – $5 million
5) Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation – $4.5 million
