Can The Age of Adaline make an impact?

We are t-minus seven days away from the arrival of Avengers: Age of Ultron in cinemas, which means this weekend’s new releases have the briefest of windows to make an impact. The question is, will they? Here are our predictions:

The Age of Adaline
is a romantic drama staring Blake Lively that’s been getting solid notices for its fashionable star. Though she’s not yet a box office draw, this film is definitely going to raise Lively’s profile, and should be a good choice for audiences looking for a date movie. Look for a second place showing with $14 million.

Also debuting this weekend is Ex Machina, a film about robot AI written and directed by Alex Garland in his directorial debut (he’s previously written 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Dredd). Reviews have been glowing, but I have a feeling that audiences who are robot hungry are simply going to wait for Ultron to make his debut. Look for a fifth place showing for Ex Machina with $5 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Furious 7 should enjoy its last weekend at the top of the box office with $20 million. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 will hit third place with $12 million, while Home will be in fourth place with $8 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Furious 7 – $20 million
2) The Age of Adaline – $14 million
3) Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 – $12 million
4) Home $8 million
5) Ex Machina – $5 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
