The Hot Tub or The DUFF – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

box2

This weekend we’ll have a comedy showdown at the box office with two new movies vying for the attention of audiences. As The DUFF and Hot Tub Time Machine 2 enter theaters this weekend along with the Kevin Costner starrer with an inspirational true story, McFarland USA, how will the champs of previous weeks like SpongeBob, Kingsmen, American Sniper, and last week’s not-so-surprise blockbuster, Fifty Shades of Grey. Who will stay on top, who will join them? Meet me after the jump for our predictions.

The cousin of Stephen Amell from “Arrow,” Robbie Amell has been burning up the small screen recently as Firestorm on “The Flash,” but can he make the leap to the big screen? He’s starring opposite Mae Whitman in The DUFF, and she’s in the title role as the nastily acronymized Designated Ugly Fat Friend.

On the other side of the new comedy coin this weekend is the sequel to Hot Tub Time Machine, the original of which I have to admit wasn’t as bad as it sounds – it was actually pretty cool. While it’s not getting the best reviews, the first weekend should get some business from folks who loved the first one. Disney’s true story of Latino high school runners and their inspirational white coach, McFarland USA, starring Kevin Costner should do decent business as well, especially with the star’s Oscar buzz. Of course an old contender like American Sniper will also have that buzz. And Fifty Shades of Grey, Kingsman, and SpongeBob should all still be strong runners as well this week.

Here’s our prediction: We at Biff Bam Pop! predict that Grey will stay on top (pun unintended) beating (well, maybe not so unintended) the rest of the flicks by at least $10 million, with SpongeBob and Kingsman still holding steady, rounded out by the two new comedies. I’m no Andy Burns, who usually does the Box Office Predictions, so I’m just guessing here, folks, place your bets as appropriate.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Fifty Shades of Grey – $40 million
2) Kingsman: The Secret Service – $30 million
3) The SpongeBob Movie : Sponge Out of Water – $28 million
4) Hot Tub Time Machine 2 – $22 million
5) The DUFF – $21 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
