If you’ve been waiting for the Spongebob Squarepants movie, it’s your weekend

Three new films are heading into theaters this weekend, and for the first time in a few weeks, we could see something new top the box office. Here are our predictions:

SB-2_posterAre you as surprised as I am that Spongebob Squarepants has had the extended life he’s had? Apparently the kids still love this lovable sponge, so much so that he’s starring in his second movie, The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water. truthfully, I have no memory of the first film coming out, but clearly I’m not the demographic the studio is looking for. Mind you, I do have a young child at home, but I won’t be taking her to see this one. Other parents likely will take their kids, though, so look for a second place showing for Spongebob with $25 million.

Also opening this weekend is Jupiter Ascending, a sci-fi film starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis. Their presence could be a draw. Unfortunately, the film is directed by The Wachowskis, who haven’t had a hit in far too many years. Both critical and audience buzz is not strong for this film, so I don’t anticipate a great debut. Look for Jupiter Ascending in third place with $18 million.

The final new release of the weekend is Seventh Son, a fantasy film with Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore. The film has been delayed for years now, and will likely die a quick death at the box office. Look for a fourth place opening with $7 million.

As for the rest of the top five, look for American Sniper to hold onto the top for a fourth weekend with $27 million, though it will be in a tight race with The Spongebob Movie. Paddington will close things out in fifth place with $5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) American Sniper – $27 million
2)  The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water – $25 million
3) Jupiter Ascending – $18 million
4) Seventh Son – $7 million
5) Paddington – $5 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
