This weekend, the sly one returns to theatres to once again assault our senses. Will audiences have some expendable cash for aging action action heres? Here’s our prediction:
The Expendables 3 is yet another blow ’em up action film from Sylvester Stallone and some of the biggest faces in action history – Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Wesley Snipes, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Antonio Banderas, Harrison Ford and Mel Gibson. It’s an amazing cast, likely surrounded by a less than adequate script. But look, what can we expect from a movie like this? As long as there are big explosions and some macho male bonding, people should be happy. Truth is, though, I believe the novelty of all these guys together has worn off. On that note, look for a third place showing with $22 million.
That means Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will hold onto the top spot at the box office for the second week in a row. Look for it to pull in around $25 million. Following in second should be Guardians of the Galaxy with $24 million. It’s going to be a tight race between those two, and they may wind up switching spots when it’s all said and done.
Closing out the top five will be two more new releases – buddy cop comedy Let’s Be Cops, which opened earlier this week, will grab fourth place with $14 million, while The Giver, a long gestating adaptation of the 1993 novel staring Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep will debut in fifth with $12 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – $25 million
2) Guardians of the Galaxy – $24 million
3) The Expendables 3 – $22 million
4) Lets Be Cops – $14 million
5) The Giver – $12 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out.
