Scarlett Johansson Takes Down The Rock – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

Lucy_(2014_film)_posterIt was an excellent weekend at the box office for the new Luc Besson film Lucy, staring Scarlett Johansson. Here’s what went down:

Lucy debut at the top of the box office with an outstanding $46 million. The unique concept combined with Johansson’s post-Marvel star power helped bring this sci-fi action flick to a wide audience. While it certainly won’t hold onto the top spot come next weekend, Lucy certainly has achieved worthwhile bragging rights for the moment.

The other new movie to debut in the top five, Hercules simply did ok, bringing in $30 million to place second. I can’t say I’m surprised – as mentioned on Friday, mythological flicks don’t tend to perform particularly well at the box office. Even the power of The Rock couldn’t raise this movie to blockbuster heights.

As for the rest of the top five, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hit third place with $16.5 million, The Purge: Anarchy was in fourth place with $10 million, Planes: Fire and Rescue closed things out in fifth with $9.5 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Hercules – $35 million
2) Lucy – $32 million
3) Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – $20 million
4) Planes: Fire and Rescue – $12 million
5) The Purge: Anarchy – $10 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

1) Lucy – $46 million
2) Hercules – $30 million
3) Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – $16.5 million
4) The Purge: Anarchy – $10 million
5) Planes: Fire and Rescue – $9.5 million

Next weekend sees the release of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Check back on Friday to see our predictions!
