22 Jump Street Scores – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

The very early box office numbers are out, and seeing as how I’ll be doing Father’s Day things today (happy happy to all the dad’s reading), I wanted to let you all know how the weekend turned out. The numbers may change slightly by tomorrow, but here’s what we’re looking at as of Sunday morning.

22_Jump_Street_PosterIt was a huge weekend for both sequels released. 22 Jump Street had a simply outstanding debut, bridging in an estimated $63 million. The reviews have been glowing and both Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill have been doing the media rounds to drum up interest. Mission accomplished, as the movie also improved upon the original’s $36 million opening. Simply a stellar showing.

Debuting in second place is How To Train Your Dragon 2 with $54 million, also a strong showing for this Dreamworks film. It was smart counter-programming to 22 Jump Street and families responded accordingly. The movie also outperformed the original’s $43 million opening.

As for the rest of the top five, Maleficent was in third place with $20.5 million; The Fault In Our Stars dropped from first to fourth $17.5 million, while Edge of Tomorrow closed things out in fifth with $16 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) How To Train Your Dragon 2 – $55 million
2) 22 Jump Street – $52 million
3) The Fault In Our Stars – $24 million
4) Maleficent – $22 million
