Spend Christmas Eve With Avengers #24 On The Tuesday Run–December 24, 2013

Who out there is so hard-core into comics, that, amidst all the hustle-bustle of last minute Christmas shopping and getting ready for family dinners, they’re still hitting their local comic book shop today?

Nice! Kudos to you, my friend! You’re the very reason I’m writing this column!

But it being Christmas Eve, it’s slim pickings today for new comics, a day earlier than they’d normally be released. Still, there’s one title, hot off of an “Infinity” of tent-pole crossovers, that you just need to be reading this holiday season.

Follow me after the jump and I’ll quickly tell you what’s what!

Because tomorrow, Christmas Day, is a holiday, the various comic book publishing companies and their distributors shipped this week’s comics to your local store late last week. They’ve been hanging on to them until today, hence a Tuesday Run instead of a Wednesday Run.

Now, there’s not that much that got published this week, so you’d be forgiven for not making a bee-line to your local “Wednesday” hangout. Still, there’s a book that did get released today that looks mighty interesting.

Mighty interesting, indeed!

Over the last two years, the Avengers comic book, written by Jonathan Hickman, has been one of the most enjoyable – and eagerly anticipated reads, out of everything I’ve been reading. The storyline finally culminated earlier this summer in the Infinity mini-series (which made the regular Wednesday Run column as a pick of the week), from which Biff Bam Pop! columnist, Glenn Walker, reviewed on a regular basis. Those pieces of writing added a lot of value to the Avengers-uninitiated, shedding light on characters and plot points and, specifically, historical context. You can read his last instalment here – which also has links to every other column written on the matter.

But that storyline was only a pause. In Avengers #24, out today, there’s a new threat starting up for our heroes that leads directly out of the pages of Infinity.

After the galaxy-spanning threat of Infinity, Captain America and Iron man make plans for a new iteration of Avengers. The series actually started off with these two characters deciding that the team had to “get bigger”. Good thing too, lest the evil faced down in Infinity destroy us all! So, what are these two heroes conceiving now?

In addition to those important decisions, there’s a runaway planet on a collision course with Earth! And you know that shockwaves will be felt in this title once word gets out about what the New Avengers characters (namely the illuminati of superheroes including Captain America, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Namor, Beast and Black Panther) have been conspiring in secret!

If you’ve got the time, make the run to your local comic book shop today and pick up Avengers #24. Be here for the beginning of the next chapter in one of pop culture’s most fun and interesting sci-fi and heroic reads over the last two years!

Every Wednesday, JP makes the after-work run to his local downtown comic book shop. Comics arrive on Wednesdays you see and JP, fearful that the latest issue will sell out, rushes out to purchase his copy. This regular, weekly column will highlight a particularly interesting release, written in short order, of course, because JP has to get his – before someone else does!
