Rise And Shine For The Wake Part 1 Collected On The Wednesday Run–December 18, 2013

Well, we told you about this particular pick over six months ago. And we were pretty confident in it. Confident that it would not only meet high expectations – but, in fact, exceed them.

And The Wake, by writer Scott Snyder and artist Sean Murphy, has done just that.

If you haven’t been reading this series, today is your chance to remedy that wrong. I know you’ve been good lads and lasses this year, so follow me after the jump and I’ll tell you why you owe it to yourself this holiday season to treat yourself to The Wake!

WAKE Collection part 1The Wake – Part One

Published by: Vertigo Comics

The Wake – Part 1, published by the resurgent Vertigo Comics (it’s been a pretty good year for the “sophisticated”, now creator-owned, imprint of DC Comics) collects the first five issues of the monthly The Wake series. This is a great a great jumping-on point for those that haven’t been reading the title. As a story set up to be published in only ten issues, this is the mid-point; the point where everything – and I mean everything – changes!

Up to now, we’re been introduced to Marine Biologist, Lee Archer, a woman whisked away by Homeland Security to an underwater oilrig in the depths of the Arctic Circle. There, she encounters a cadre of scientists, engineers, government agents and hunters. Wait. What?

Yeah, The Wake tells the horror story of the discovery of the missing sea-link to human kind: a new species, wonderful and terrifying. This is The Abyss, Aliens and The Thing all rolled up into one. Caught in a mechanical, underwater abode, the claustrophobia is overpowering and the terror is palpable. Just when you think you’ve reached the conclusion of Lee’s story, Snyder and Murphy change the game and everything gets…bigger.

And that’s where you’ll be at the end of The Wake – Part One, a 112-page sci-fi horror collection of what has been with a promise of what is to come.
