Insidious 2 vs The Family – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

Two new releases this weekend would like to bring you into movie theatres, but I’m fairly sure only one of them will get your money. Here’s our predictions:

Insidious_–_Chapter_2_PosterInsidious 2 is the sequel to the 2011 original, which wound up doing great business, grossing $54 million off a $1.5 million budget. No wonder we’re heading into sequel territory, right? Considering the success of the original and the PG rating for this one, we should see Insidious 2 do even better with it’s opening weekend. Plus, it’s Friday The 13th – is there a better day to open a horror film? Look for a first place showing with $35 million.

Find out how the rest of the weekend will turn after the jump!
The_Family_2013,_Poster“Let’s go see the new Luc Besson comedy,” said nobody, ever. From the director of the Taken films and The Professional comes The Family, a mob film staring Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer. Maybe this film would have found an audience in theaters in the 90s, but in 2013 neither leads can open a film anymore. That doesn’t mean they can’t still be great; maybe The Family will be funny, but it will have to wait for an audience to find it on demand or on DVD. Look for a fifth place showing with $5 million.

As for the rest of the top five, look for Riddick to drop to second place with $8.5 million. Lee Daniels’ The Butler will claim third place with $7 million, while We’re The Millers will be in fourth place with $5.5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Insidious 2 – $35 million
2) Riddick – $8.5 million
3) Lee Daniels’ The Butler – $7 million
4) We’re The Millers – $5.5 million
5) The Family – $5 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out.
