Despicable Me 2 Overpowers Pacific Rim & Grown Ups 2 – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

I put off doing the wrap-up report simply because all weekend long, the numbers were fluctuating. Often times the numbers and films switch, but this weekend seemed particularly close as to which movie would come out on top. After waiting a few extra hours, here’s what we can report:

For the second weekend in a row, Despicable Me 2 was number one at the box office, grossing $44.7 million to bring its two week tally to an outstanding $229 million. I’m guessing we won’t have to wait too long for a third film in the franchise.

Debuting in second place with $42.5 million was Grown Ups 2. Horrible reviews (5% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes) couldn’t stop this family friendly, Adam Sandler flick was finding an audience, proof that during the summer, sometimes all people want is some seriously mindless entertainment.

Following along in third place with a disappointing $38 million was Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim, which in turn was the exact opposite of Grown Ups 2. The film notched stellar reviews from most critics, but genre lovers simply didn’t come out in abundance. Perhaps it was the lack of star power, or its perceived similarity to Transformers – either way, this can’t be considered anything other than a bust.

As for the rest of the top five, The Heat was in fourth place with $14 million, while The Lone Ranger closed things out in fifth with $11 million. That film is sitting at just $77 million, and may not even break the $100 million mark in North America.

3) Grown Ups 2 – $44 million
4) The Heat – $14 million
5) World War Z – $12 million
