Jack The Giant Slayer Climbs To The Top – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack did alright but he wasn’t quite a hit.

It was the sort of box office weekend that pundits will be split on – half full or half empty. This time out, I’m a half empty guy. Here’s why.

Jack The Giant Slayer opened this weekend and pulled in $28 million. This is, in many ways, not a bad number, especially considering that Nicholas Hought or Ewan McGregor are big box office draws (though they are well liked by those in the know). However, the budget for Bryan Singer’s latest was reportedly around the $200 million mark. That’s a huge number for a non-franchise, non sci-flick with name actors. So what should have been a decent debut starts to look a lot less impressive knowing that Jack The Giant Slayer will not come anywhere making back it’s budget, at least in North America. Throw in the fact that the higher profile Oz: The Great and Powerful hits theatres next weekend and my guess is Jack The Giant Slayer isn’t long for this world.

Find out how the rest of the weekend turned out after the jump!
As for the rest of the weekend, it was terrible for the other debuts. 21 and Over could muster $9 million, while The Last Exorcism Part II lacked the appeal we predicted, settling for a dismal fourth place with just $8 million. Meanwhile, Identity Thief grabbed $9.7 million for second place, while Snitch closed things out in fifth with $7.7 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Jack The Giant Slayer –  $25 million
2) The Last Exorcism Part II – $20 million
3) Identity Thief – $11 million
4) Snitch – $9.5 million
5) Escape From Planet Earth – $8 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

1) Jack The Giant Slayer –  $28 million
2) Identity Thief – $9.7 million
3) 21 and Over– $9 million
4) The Last Exorcism Part II – $8 million
5) Snitch – $7.7 million

As mentioned, next weekend sees the release of Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful. Check back on Friday to see our predictions!
