Argo vs Sinister vs Here Comes The Boom – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Predictions

Lots of new releases hitting theatres this weekend, but how many of them will be able to make it into top five? Here’s our predictions and picks for the ones that are going to resonate with audiences.

The latest film from director Ben Affleck, Argo is the allegedly true story of the 1979 rescue of six U.S. diplomats from Iran during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. The film has generated big time Oscar buzz and was well received during the Toronto International Film Festival last month (you can read our review here). Will the buzz mean big box office bucks? Not necessarily, though Argo will likely have strong word of mouth that could keep it strong and make it a slow burn film. Look for a fourth place debut with $15 million.

So will any new release claim the top spot? Find out after the jump!

Sinister is a horror film staring Ethan Hawke as a true-crime novelist who discovers a box of home movies that appear to be supernatural, thus putting his family in danger. A mix of found-footage and traditional film, Sinister has some very strong buzz going for it with horror fans. Since its October, and we’re still waiting for the release of Paranormal Activity IV, I think Sinister is going to scratch the proverbial itch for genre fans. Look for a first place debut with $29 million.

Here Comes The Boom stars Kevin James as a biology teacher who becomes a Mixed Martial Artist to help raise money to save his school’s music program. The concept sounds ridiculous, and I think this is just the wrong time of year a film like this. Frankly, I don’t know when the right time of year would be. However, the fanbase Kevin James has built up should at least put Here Comes The Boom in fifth place with $10 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Taken 2 will drop to second with $23 million, while Hotel Transylvania will check into third with $18 million.

Also opening in theatres is Seven Psychopaths (check out our review from TIFF here) and The Perks Of Being A Wallflower.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Sinister – $29 million
2) Taken 2 – $23 million
3) Hotel Transylvania – $18 million
4) Argo – $15 million
5) Here Comes The Boom – $10 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!

  1. I do want to see Argo because I remember the event when it happened, but the other two I’ll wait until someone sees the movies first.
