Matt Damon may not be onboard, but audiences still responded in a huge way to the latest entry in the Bourne franchise. Meanwhile, two other new releases posted some excellent number. Here’s how the weekend went down.
As predicted, The Bourne Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner, did great business, grossing $40 million for its opening weekend, beating back middling reviews and the absence of Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne. Not only does the film’s opening number signal the continuing health of the franchise, but it also cements Jeremy Renner as a leading actor that audiences will pay money to see. I wonder how this bodes for a Hawkeye film?

The Campaign debut in second place with a strong $27 million, the team-up of comedy gurus Will Ferrell and Zach Galifiniakas clearly a huge draw for audiences. With the political landscape heating up in the U.S., it will be interesting to see what kind of legs the film has over the coming weeks.
The final new release of the weekend, Hope Springs also performed well, debuting in fourth place with a decent $15.6 million. Clearly, Meryl Streep can do no wrong, coming off her latest Oscar win in The Iron Lady. This is another film that should have legs over the coming weeks, as it acts as counter programming to the summer blockbusters.
As for the rest of the top five, The Dark Knight Rises gave up first place to land in third with $19 million, bringing its domestic total to $390 million. It should cross the $400 million mark over the next few days. Meanwhile, Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days closes things out with $8.2 million. If you’re keeping track, Total Recall was right behind it in sixth with $8.1 million.
