Two new films debut this weekend but neither could shut down the success of The Dark Knight Rises, which held onto the top spot at the box office for the third weekend in a row. Find out what went down at theatres after the jump!
It was an easy win for the Caped Crusader, as The Dark Knight Rises brought in another $36 million to lift its North American total to a stellar $354 million. While not the runaway juggernaut that The Dark Knight was, the film is still hugely successful, with its worldwide total now sitting at $733 million.
Debuting in second place with $26 million was Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake starring Colin Farrell. While not a bad opening, I think its fair to say all involved were looking for a stronger number. Though visually stimulating and full of non-stop action (I can attest to this; review coming soon), as mentioned on Friday, nobody involved can open a film, and its numbers showed. Total Recall will need some strong word of mouth to keep it from dropping quickly in the coming weeks.
Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days debut in third place with just $14 million, the lowest in film franchise history. This is the first entry to debut during the summer, which clearly didn’t work for this one. The budge for Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Das was only $22 million, so it should still manage to make it back and then a little extra in the coming week.s
As for the rest of the top five, Ice Age: Continental Drift landed in fourth place with $8.4 million, while The Watch closed things out in fifth with $6 million.
