Tom Cruise and Rock Of Ages Battles Adam Sandler’s That’s My Boy – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions, Weekend of June 15th, 2012

An R-rated comedy from two Saturday Night Live alum and a rock and roll musical that will take you back to 1987 are the big films opening this weekend. Will either of them manage to knock Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted from the top of the box office? Here are our predictions:

That’s My Boy stars Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg as an estranged father and son whose reunion is supposed to be played out tv (for more details check out our review here). An R-rated comedy will hopefully wipe the stench of Jack and Jill off of Sandler, and having Internet-fave Samberg in the film should help it rise to a strong opening weekend. Even if critics don’t love it, Sandler does have a built-in audience, so look for That’s My Boy to debut in second place with $29 million.

Also debuting this weekend is Rock of Ages, the 80’s hair band musical staring Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Tom Cruise and based on the hit broadway show. We’ve got a review coming, but I can tell you that this film is fun, especially for those of us who love the music of the era, and features an absolutely fantastic performance from Cruise which is worth the price of admission alone. I’m anticipating that Rock of Ages will be a crowd-pleaser with some legs over the next few weeks, and could wind up placing second when the weekend wraps up. However, my gut is saying we’ll see the film actually place third with $27 million. It will definitely be a tight race between that one and That’s My Boy.

As for the rest of the top five, the family friendly Madagascar 3 will continue its family friendly reign at number one with $32 million. Last week’s number two, Prometheus, will slide to four with $25 million as it inches its way closer to the $100 million mark. Meanwhile, Snow White and the Huntsman will close out the top five with $16 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted – $32 million
2) That’s My Boy – $29 million
3) Rock of Ages – $27 million
4) Prometheus –   $25 million
5) Snow White and the Huntsman – $16 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
