Can Think Like A Man or Zac Efron’s The Lucky One Best The Hunger Games? Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions, Weekend of April 20th, 2012

Two movies are looking to take down The Hunger Games this weekend – one based on a popular book by Steve Harvey, the other the latest from hearthrob Zac Efron. I’m sceptical either will come out on top. Here are our predictions:

Think Like A Man is looking to capture the same African-American/Canadian audience that flocks to Tyler Perry films, and the fact that the film is based on the bestselling Steve Harvey book Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man should help it do just that, but only somewhat. There are no huge stars in the film and director Tim Story is best known for the Fantastic Four films, which won’t draw anybody to theatres. I’m predicting a second place finish with $19 million for Think Like A Man.

Also debuting this week is the Zac Efron romance, The Lucky One, based on the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name. It’s been a while since Zac’s had a hit on his hands, but The Lucky One could change all that. Sparks is the author of The Notebook and Dear John, which should help draw in a strong female audience. I’m predicting a third place showing for The Lucky One and a gross of $17 million.

As for the rest of the top five, I have a strong feeling that The Hunger Games will be able to hold onto the top spot at the box office for the fifth weekend in a row. I’m predicting a first place showing with a gross of $20.5 million. The Three Stooges will place fourth with $11 million and The Cabin In The Woods will close things out with $9 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) The Hunger Games – $20.5 million
2) Think Like A Man – $19 million
3) The Lucky One – $17 million
4) The Three Stooges – $11 million
5) The Cabin In The Woods – $9 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out.
