DVD Tuesday with Scotty G

Megamind – This animated film has the voice talents of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill and Brad Pitt. Will Ferrell voices the title character of Megamind, a super-villain who has a long running feud with Metro Man. Megamind eventually wins a battle against his arch-nemesis, but soon finds out that every ying needs a yang, and life without an opponent is just not fun. I made this synopsis as spoiler free as possible, as the plot is a little more complicated than that, but to find out about it, you’ll have to watch the film (or read the plot synopsis on other websites). The film was a hit at the box office and is the highest profile title on DVD this week.

Due Date – This comedy stars Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis and is directed by Todd Phillips. The film revolves around Downey Jr.’s character trying to get home from Atlanta to Los Angeles to see the birth of his baby. Unfortunately for him, he is on a no-fly list and is told to find another way home. Enter Galifianakis. His character is an actor on his way to Hollywood. Downey Jr. reluctantly agrees to go on a road trip with the man, despite his better judgment. On the way there, everything goes wrong and Downey Jr. looks like he’s going to miss the birth of his child. The film has a “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” vibe to it, and it was a fair size hit at the box office.

For Colored Girls – Based on the acclaimed play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf”, this film is directed by Tyler Perry and follows the lives of nine women and how they interconnect with other while discussing what it is like to be a black woman in society. The film has an all-star cast in Phylicia Rashad, Thandie Newton, Anika Noni Rose, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, Janet Jackson and Whoopi Goldberg. The film was expected to be an Oscar contender, but reviews were negative and those hopes were quickly dashed. Still, for fans of the play or fans of the director and actresses, this is worth checking out.

Get Low – This film stars Robert Duvall and Bill Murray and is about a hermit who lives in the woods. He comes out of hiding one day and he wants to hold a party, but not just any party – he wants to hold a funeral for himself while he’s still alive. The townsfolk are intrigued by this as they can tell the hermit about the stories they have heard of him over the years, and they will now find out if the stories are true or not. There is a mystery to why the man has been in hiding so long, and the townsfolk hope to find out the truth. It’s a quirky film that didn’t get a big release, but Duvall and Murray have their fans, and they’ll want to see this one.

All-Star Superman – Superman battles Lex Luthor one more time as Luthor is using solar radiation poisoning to destroy the Man of Steel. Thinking that the end is near, Superman must muster up the strength to reveal his true identity to Lois Lane and battle his arch-nemesis for the last time. For fans only, as this is a Direct-to-DVD release.

Alien vs. Ninja – This film has a title that almost begs you to go out and buy the DVD. The film follows a clan of ninjas who witness something from space crash into a forest. When the ninjas find the landing site, aliens emerge and battle the ninjas. After a bloody fight, the surviving ninjas vow revenge on the aliens, but have learned their lesson that their primitive weapons are no match for their outer space counterparts. Will the aliens win, or will the ninjas find the strength to defeat this new enemy? You’ll have to watch the film to find out.
